The Sermon

On May 26, the Jonestown Reenactment began the journey towards that November day in Jonestown, 1978 with a performance which reconstructs one of Jim Jones infamous political sermons and 'miracle healings' from the mid seventies in San Francisco. The performance; The Promised Land, took take place at the ICA, upstairs in the Nash Rooms, it was also accompanied by a display of reconstructed documents and other related material.
 
The performance reconstructed one of Jones's powerful anti capitalist sermons. It was based upon transcripts and tapes of Jones' sermons and monologues recorded at the time. Jones was and will be portrayed by actor Graeme Edler, and supported by a small number of collaborators. The performance also contained a reconstruction of one of Jones' miracle healings or cancer healings. Using sleight of hand Jones would manifest 'cancerous' growths from members of his congregation.
